You're absolutely right.

But, this is code designed to be read and studied by students who are taking the equivalent of the first year of a college computer science sequence. It's not tricky. It's very straightforward and doesn't try to twist the API or anything otherwise untoward. If it doesn't work and it's a code problem then the contract for how a JVM reacts to bytecode is way too lax.

I think you're missing Dmitry's point, which is that none of this shows
that Apple's code is at fault; it could still be the case study code
that is at fault. Just because some code happens to work sometimes, on
some operating systems, or on some machines, under some circumstances,
doesn't mean the code is correct.
