setting up emacs as your java editor

Can anyone point me in the right direction for setting up emacs as my java development environment. The best help I could find was a cached article at:

http://216.239.53.104/search?q=cache:M86_C2IEs5gJ:astron.berkeley.edu/~jhall/jde_macosx.html+jdee+mac+os+x&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

In particular, do you think I'm better off running emacs inside of X-Windows, and in either case what's the easiest way to get things set up so I can start working?

tia,

Russ
