1.3.1 is the current JVM for any standard Mac OS X install. You should be
able to find it on your system installation CD's. It's distributed as part
of the OS, so there isn't a separate download or install for it. You may
be able to install it as a custom install of the OS, but I don't know how
it will react to be installed over 1.4.1. Probably safest to do it on a
separate partition.

I'm not sure how you could lose 1.3.1 entirely, since it isn't removed when
1.4.1 installs. The 1.3.1 JVM, commands, etc. should be at:
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.3.1/

There you should find these directories:
Classes
Commands
Headers
Home
Libraries
