Sorry to join late in beating the dead horse, but are two side-points I
wanted to make.
While Sun isn't getting rid of Java3D they aren't exactly pushing it or
particularly supporting it. Since JOGL was mentioned at JavaOne and
Java3D wasn't you can reach your own conclusions.
That just about sums up the known facts. Here is a little bit more
info gleaned from other Java 3D discussion lists.

"I think the thing most likely to kill Java3D deadest quickest is the
continued lack of any official position on it from Sun while we discuss
this question on every Java3D related forum. It would be good to hear an
official statement of some sort, even if it is just to back up the
rumours."

The Official Java 3D home page
<http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/3D/>
says nothing about any change in status.
It has a "NEW"-highlighted link for Java 3D 1.3.1 FCS.
The last (?) public statement by a member of the Java 3D team
was by Doug Twilleager, Chief Architect of Java 3D, after a JavaOne BOF :
"Java 3D 1.3 -- We are just a couple of weeks away from FCS code freeze."
"After Java 3D 1.3, we will start work on Java 3D 1.3.1."
"We hope to release Java 3D 1.3.1 around the end of this calendar year,
beginning of next."
"In parallel with Java 3D 1.3.1, I will be leading a new JSR to add new
features to Java 3D. These will be targetted at Java 3D 1.4."
"Since the Java 3D team is smaller than it once was, we are looking for
other ways to finish all the implementation work for Java 3D 1.4. One
thing we are looking at is engaging the community and expert group to
provide implementation resources as well as API expertise."

[JSR-189 = " Java 3D API 1.4"]
<http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=189>
That was then...
"Most of you remember me as one of the architects of Java 3D.
Well, I am now the chief architect for this newly formed game
technologies group."
"My group is responsible for making it possible to build networked games
in Java. Java 3D plays a part in that, but it is not our central focus.
Java 3D 1.4 is currently in a holding pattern. The API in JSR-184 serves
the needs of the devices it is targetted at. For those types of devices,
high level API's serve the needs better. It was not technically feasible
to do a straight subset of Java 3D, so that was not used. There will be
some more announcements at JavaOne next week which will give developers
even more technology choices for building their games."

[JSR-184 = "Mobile 3D Graphics API for J2ME"]
<http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=184>
"There are open source implementations of Java bindings to OpenGL (the
most complete and up to date available), Java bindings to OpenAL, and a
new input controller library that supports all types of input devices.
The project names are jogl, joal, and jinput respectively."
- Doug Twilleager Chief Architect Java Game Technologies Sun Microsystems
13 Jun 2003
"From what I've seen publically, nobody at Sun is working on
J3D any more. Kelvin, I believe is taking bug reports, but not doing any
bug fixes. Mark Hood is floating around but no idea what he's doing
these days, and that's it. There's nobody left. DougT isn't working on
J3D, and hasn't AFAIK for the last 12 months or so. There ain't nobody
else home in j3d land at Sun."
