Re: RIP Java 3D

Take a look at the Xith3D project at http://xith3d.dev.java.net/
This is a project to build a scene graph API based largely on Java3D, but using the JOGL *OR* LWJGL bindings to access the graphics hardware, the idea being that the underlying rendering could even be DirectX on windows or whatever OpenGL bindings happen as a result of the mentioned press release. There is no real reason that Java3D itself could not be ported to some sort of OpenGL bindings, thus reducing or eliminating the need for further porting efforts of Java3D as it would become a pure Java implementation. It is clear that a scene graph API is wanted and that one or more will happen regardless of Sun's actions.

How timely considering the recent thread:

SGI and Sun Microsystems' Software Platforms to Work Seamlessly Together with Java Bindings to Opengl

Based on this, I wouldn't expect Apple to ever support Java 3D, and I expect Sun to soon drop support as well. This should end one on going thread of discussion...

...and surely start another.
