Re: RIP Java 3D

I have mentioned (several times) recently my revival of the JFree-D implementation of Java3d, built upon the gl4java bindings to OpenGL. Although the path is not an obvious one, it is definitely possible to run a subset of Java3d on Mac OS X. I have an application that demonstrates this.

JFree-D is precisely what Scott describes below... a Java3d scene graph implemented on an OpenGL binding.

I recently created a SourceForce project to house the "jFreeD2" implementation:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jfreed2/

You can go and try it out. Anyone who wants to collaborate to improve the coverage of jFreeD2 is welcome... contact me about becoming a developer.

I'll have to check out Xith3d... sounds like a similar approach to mine, which also strives to enable various possible native GL underpinnings.

There is no real reason that Java3D itself could not be ported to some sort of OpenGL bindings, thus reducing or eliminating the need for further porting efforts of Java3D as it would become a pure Java implementation. It is clear that a scene graph API is wanted and that one or more will happen regardless of Sun's actions.
