Re: Mac OS X Java Performance (Graphics)

Hi Daniel

Folks on the JAI list hosted at Sun have been asking this forever, and
the same answer comes back every time ... Apple and Sun cannot reach
agreement on what is necessary to achieve this, further details left
to the imagination.

The pure Java implementation will run of course, but suffers not only
in terms of performance from the lack of native acceleration, but also
in the lack of support of various vital codecs (like JPEG) that are
only in native form. It is disappointing that the many of the JIIO
codecs won't work on the Mac (though there is a pure Java JPEG 2000
JIIO codec based on JJ2000 that I seem to recall works).

As I understand it, JAI is a relatively thin layer over Sun's medialib
image processing libraries, and these would need to be ported or all
their relevant functionality replicated.
