Re: Mac OS X Java Performance

There was an interesting talk at this years JavaONE on XAWT (http://servlet.java.sun.com/javaone/sf2003/conf/sessions/display- 1999.en.jsp). It's a hooks the AWT and Java2D APIs directly to X11 (bypassing the Motif layer that current versions interface with). The reason I bring this up, is that if one wanted to have a fast implementation of Java that ran on Mac OS X presumably this would be one way of doing it. It would also consolidate the work that different UNIX groups have to do to get Java GUI toolkits to run on their platform. XAWT will ship with the Tiger (JDK 1.5) release next year.

Whether or not XAWT will be part of Blackdown, is a question that has yet to be asked of Sun. But is does bring up the possibility of having a well performing, open source version of Java running on Darwin, and therefore not subject to Apple's resource constraints.
