I'd like to point out that the statement below is false. Apple is not the only platform that must "bear the brunt." The FreeBSD project also must port the sun code to the freebsd platform. Apple is way ahead of FreeBSD. In fact, FreeBSD group can't even release binaries of any Java 2 jdk yet.

Good point, thanks!

Sun ports java to platforms it likes or considers important. I bet they wouldn't support linux except that they are using it on some server products.

Sun doesn't make money on java, only selling computers. (most people don't buy their ide or server products) Why waste money porting?

This is exactly the point! I wasn't too clear, however. Basically I feel it is unrealistic on Sun's part to expect the platform providers to port Java without using the open source approach. If java were open source, I have a hunch the BSD implementation would be available today!

And to be more concrete, the conversion to greater portability could actually be done in two steps:

1 - Convert a considerable amount of existing native code to java.
This was in the plans in the past, waiting for HotSpot which would
allow the native-to-java conversion with minor performance hit.

2 - Convert the SDK to open source.

This would make the evolution of the semantics of Java an issue. I think the JCP might be the answer, and indeed would up make it a more important forum than it currently is.

As per the initial issue, performance, I suspect this could level the playing field considerably.

I'll stop now, and thanks for the patience.
