We're beginning to whip the greasy spot in the pavement where the dead horse used to be, but I can't help mentioning that there is no technical reason that the FreeBSD Java folk haven't released Java 2 binaries. In fact, there is a port in the ports tree for 1.4 and it builds and works just fine (I've built and used it more than once). The only thing holding up a binary release is Sun's licensing requirements, which IMHO represent an unreasonably high barrier to open source projects.
