Re: Mac OS X Java Performance

The jdk 1.4 port to freebsd does not pass the sun tests yet. There are classes that are buggy and not complete. Read the freebsd java list or look at the bug database to learn more there. The port can be used for many tasks, but it does not support the full 1.4 spec correctly yet.

Sun wants java runtimes to work.. if there is different behavior then we lose the write once, run anywhere promise. Doesn't matter if you are talking about freebsd, mac os, or any other platform.

Sorry If i am off topic.

We're beginning to whip the greasy spot in the pavement where the dead horse used to be, but I can't help mentioning that there is no technical reason that the FreeBSD Java folk haven't released Java 2 binaries. In fact, there is a port in the ports tree for 1.4 and it builds and works just fine (I've built and used it more than once). The only thing holding up a binary release is Sun's licensing requirements, which IMHO represent an unreasonably high barrier to open source projects.
