Failure to load applet over SSL

I think I know the answer to this one, but I will defer to those with much more knowledge.

I have an applet that loads without problems on all of the browsers I have tested. I wanted to restrict access to the page it was on, and put it on a page which required SSL (https). When I do this, it still works fine using Safari, but fails to load when using IE, Mozilla or Camino under Mac OS X. The error is "Bad Magic Number".

My assumption is that this has to do with a bug when loading applets over SSL, and that this was corrected in Safari's implementation but not the others.

My questions are:

Is this explanation correct?

Is there a workaround? I want "naive" users to be able to access the page, without forcing them to install or re-install their browser.

Thanks in advance,

David Linker
