The Lycos version (http://finance.lycos.com/qc/news/story.aspx?story=40981937) says "Google Inc. announced Wednesday" (that is, March 31), and the article itself has a timestamp of "31 March 2004, 8:18pm ET", which would be 5:18 PM Pacific Time (Google being based in California), which isn't April 1 by any reasonable interpretation. Should we now distrust things that *don't* happen on April 1?
Well, look at the press release on google's on website:
http://www.google.com/press/pressrel/gmail.html
Notice that it says April 1 2004 UTC.
Maybe you could try entering your email address into

to see what happens? :-)
