It most definitely does not say that. You are not required to release anything you add to GPL'd software. You are absolutely free to keep it private if you wish. It just says that if you do release it, you have to give others the same freedomms you have.

This keeps the software "free", but restrains the freedom of humans.

The only freedom of humans GPL in any way restricts is the freedom to restrict other humans' freedom. I'm reminded of the arguments of some religious zealots that the first amendment restricts their religious freedom because it prohibits them from persecuting other religions.

BSD is less restrictive. It says that you can do anything you like with the software, including redistribute modified versions for profit, as long as you tell people who wrote the code you used.

GPL lets you do anything you like with the software, including redistribute modified versions for profit.

Personally, I prefer BSD. Freedom is more important for people than software.

If you believe every person's freedom is equally important, you should prefer GPL. If you believe your freedom is more important than other people's, and you want the right to restrict other people's freedom, then you should prefer BSD.
