But do we really care about them?

I don't see it as a Mac versus Windows thing at all. If I need crtitical infomation in real time, then a fixed format layout makes a great deal of sense. Ditto if I have optimized the layout to perform some repetitive task. On the other hand, if I am data mining, I want that freedom to roam that comes with free standing windows. Developer's needs are quite volatile. If Windows developers lean toward fixed form, that is adaptive behavior that is no longer relevant for any modern operating system. It goes without saying that a really excellent application like Eclipse should offer both ways to its users and let them mix and match.

Honestly, I would take a crack at it if I had any free time at all.
