Isn't it true that at least some of the optimizations that have been added into the server JVM are hardware dependent? Sun type hardware specifically. I think the software type optimizations involved would favor longer running tasks where the server runs for hours or days. I still don't think these types of optimizations would buy you much for computationally intense code.
