This may be one of those "common knowledge" things that isn't so common.

However, in this article I read today, it's acknowledged in the section
entitled "The G5":

The question on the tip of every Mac-user's tongue is "when will
we see new G5s?" Unfortunately, the analysts have long since
learned about the futility of asking about future products and
ship dates, so no one even broached the question.

There have also been specific cases in the past where a question on this
list eventually elicited a "we do not comment..." statement from Apple. I
can't think of any recent ones, probably because most subscribers have
already learned the lesson.
