Why does it take so much convincing to get Apple to do something about Java? We're constantly told to file bug reports, and frequent contributors, including myself sometimes, repeat this advice that if we want something changed, we have to let Apple know. I still agree. However, it seems that many things should happen without us having to beg for it for so long.

People have been asking about the server VM ever since Mac OS 10.0 came out. People have been complaining about performance problems in the VM ever since 10.0 came out. People have been trying to mix Cocoa-Java with AWT/Swing ever since 10.0 came out. These questions have never disappeared. How many clues do they need?

There is little doubt in my mind that it comes down to resources. The Apple Java team seems ridiculously small to handle the VM itself, WebObjects, Cocoa-Java, Java3D, etc. My hat is off to these guys.

It should be a matter of business opportunity. If there would be money to be made in developing and improving the Java VM, or if there would be exposure and industry leadership to be gained by having an insanely great VM, then you can bet Apple would do it. Strangely, Apple makes a client VM when the real Java money is in server apps. Sounds backwards to me.
