I strongly suggest putting together a few simple test cases that show radical performance differences between the client and server VM on windows, and file bugs with Apple showing how your real world tasks would be fixed if they implemented the true server vm.

Why does it take so much convincing to get Apple to do something about Java? We're constantly told to file bug reports, and frequent contributors, including myself sometimes, repeat this advice that if we want something changed, we have to let Apple know. I still agree. However, it seems that many things should happen without us having to beg for it for so long.

Apple needs to prioritize what their folks work on (as you said they have a relatively small Java team)... they use defect/enhancement reports and customer / developer feedback to do this (just about all companies do this). They don't need any convincing they just need information to help them understand the big ticket issues remaining.

People have been asking about the server VM ever since Mac OS 10.0 came out.

How [many | severe] in comparison to other issues?

People have been complaining about performance problems in the VM ever since 10.0 came out.

How [many | severe] in comparison to other issues? Also the complaints have been in various areas and various areas have improved...

People have been trying to mix Cocoa-Java with AWT/Swing ever since 10.0 came out.

How [many | severe] in comparison to other issues?

These questions have never disappeared. How many clues do they need?

If you see an issue that affects something you are trying to do... the more "clues" Apple has the more likely they can make the most amount of folks happy sooner.

You also have to understand that Mac OS X is an OS that is rapidly evolving (still relatively young) and the Java team is sometimes purposively delaying the implementation of certain items because the know the core OS will in the not so distant future provide aspect of the feature that the can leverage.

Anyway I happen to work at a very big company (HP) but on a rather small team that has to deal with the nearly same set of development planning issues. So I know some of what this team is likely facing.
