You might check out Greg Guerin's stuff too. Back when he was one of the few others providing open sourced JDirect it used to be useful to me checking it as a reference since he had solved a number of the same things I had to.
Since he has switched to JNI maybe it would be more useful to you than what I posted. I think he converted his MacBinary Toolkit which would probably have something along the lines of what you are looking for.
