This thread reminds me of the release of Panther. Mac OS 10.3.0 had a bug that only affected a small percentage of systems which caused similar problems with Java. Apple ended up rolling a patch to fix it eventually. I actually ended up doing an archive and install before the patch was released at the time.

Most people said i was crazy then. In my case, I was running 10.2.8 with a developer release of the jvm. Perhaps there is something non-standard about your configuration that "found" the bug. It is also possible that the update did not complete due to file system corruption, odd permissions, etc.

I will attempt installing the update on my trusty ibook. If anything "odd" happens, i'll report it to the list.
