Custom cursors broken in 1.4.2?

The custom cursors I use for various tools don't work in the 1.4.2 release JVM under Mac OS X 10.3.2. The cursors appear to be garbled but so little of the cursor is displayed it could just be clipped. I have verified that none of the underlying gifs are corrupted and the same application works properly in the 1.4.2 Windows JVM with the same gif files (merged into the jar). Using ToolKit.getBestCursorSize(int, int) returns dimensions that match the dimensions of the cursor gif image. Returned dimensions are greater than 0,0 which means the Toolkit can create custom cursors. The cursor gifs are 1 bit, 32 x 32 with the background color (white) set to transparent. Is this a know problem or am I missing some step that the Sun JVM doesn't require? TIA
