As I recall, your project has a deadline.

If you already know Java, why would you want to add the learning-curve for
a completely new language and libraries into your schedule? More work,
same amount of time.

If the new language offered some huge multiplier for the task at hand, such
as 50X programmer productivity in expressing algorithms that operate on
XML, then maybe the language learning-curve is worthwhile. Scheduling an
accurate elapsed-time to reach sufficient language-competency might be
tricky, though, regardless of anything else.

Especially when you say:

It may be exciting to learn a new language, but it seems to me like it's
addressing the wrong problem here.
