Re: CodeGuide

I tried out CodeGuide 6.1 over the weekend and here's a mini-review.

The main advantage I found is that unlike IntelliJ, CodeGuide runs fast on my 700Mhz eMac, at least for small projects. (Guess I won't have to buy a G5 after all.) I also found the UI reasonably intuitive - it's similar enough to IntelliJ that I was able to pick it up in an hour and it didn't get in my way too much. (I never quite got the hang of Eclipse and Xcode is very alien for a Java developer.)

However, CodeGuide's UI is less polished and is unfinished in places. There is no Mac keymap so you have to make your own, and the UI for that is difficult to figure out. There are fewer refactorings and they don't work quite as well. (For example, when CodeGuide creates a new method, the formatting is off, so you have to run "autoformat" on it manually.) It also crashed on me twice.

On the whole I'd say they're on the right track and future versions should be worthy competitors with IntelliJ. As it is, it's good enough for my occasional home project.

P.S. Here's a tip: don't set apple.laf.useScreenMenuBar or some of the menus will be messed up. (For example, the Tools menu is blank.)
