Tomcat and port 80

As long as we're talking about how to run Tomcat on port 80 without running it as root... I've wanted to ask about this for a while now, but it seemed slightly off-topic...

Does anybody know how to use "ipfw" (ip firewall) to forward port 80 to a non-privileged port? Has anybody tried using this trick to get Tomcat to serve on port 80 on MacOS X? If so, can you perhaps share your experiences? Or is there a better way to do this?

We use port forwarding with iptables on some of our Linux boxes, to avoid running Tomcat as root. I've been meaning to look into how to do something equivalent on Panther, but haven't quite gotten around to it yet.

I've managed to use mod_rewrite to set up a reverse proxy configuration which does the same sort of thing, but I'd prefer not to have to use Apache. Also, yes, I am familiar with mod_jk; we use it on one of our Linux boxes, but again, I'd prefer not to have to use Apache.

I'm also curious because I'd like to be able to run Java based HTTP servers other than Tomcat on port 80, so I'd like a non-Tomcat-specific solution.

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks,

Scott
