I realise that this might not be java specific, but I am trying
to set an icon for a file type.

I have put the settings in the Info.plist (via Xcode), but the

Is this usual and does anyone have any experience with this?

Rebuilding the desktop is usually the long term suggestion.
Method varies by OS version so google for your particular one.

A quicker method is possible as long as you remember to follow up
with long term version when finished with document information in
app-bundle plist. Assuming you have picked a fairly unique creator
code, simply varying it after each plist change creates a "new"
application as far as LS is concerned. For example, "abc0", "abc1",
... Beats the logout/login procedure for applying plist changes.

Be careful not to use a creator code already registered on your
machine when using this technique!
