Manifest 'Main-Class' Format

My application seems to work correctly on both Mac and Windows if I specify the main class in the manifest file with either

Main-Class: mypackage1/mypackage2/MyClass

or

Main-Class: mypackage1.mypackage2.MyClass

Is one one of these 'right' and the other 'wrong', and if so which is which, and why? I've not managed to find any information on whether one should use slashes or periods.
