Quite frankly I don't know why they don't put it and the source code for it in the public domain. It would make a great example - unless maybe it is such a hack that they are embarrassed to show the source code :).

I wouldn't be surprised if the Apple engineers agree with the idea, but Apple lawyers and policy makers don't like it.

Sun supplies the source code to the java and javaw command line launchers as part of their JDK for Windows. It would be great if Apple did the same for both the 'java' command line launcher and the application stub. Specially since I've been told that there are a few tricks involved to get things working smoothly on the Mac. You can tell others are running up against issues with it when you see the double dock icon problem with Eclipse. (I think that comes about by Eclipse being a Carbon app and the 'normal' java app stub being Cocoa and the voodoo required to integrate well with the Mac UI if you aren't using Objective C.)
