Re: Legality of disturbiting JavaApplicationStub, part of my app?

Well, no. I'd think that licensing requirements would be easy to find if there *were* any. That's how they generally work: the licensing terms *are* usually easy to find. That Apple says nothing about it suggests that there aren't any. (According to Google, there are only six references on Apple's *entire web site* to JavaApplicationStub, all in documents telling how it's used by the various developer tools.)

Hmm. Except that with current copyright law, an item is assumed to be copyrighted unless it is otherwise declared. So it seems naive to assume that just because you don't find the distribution terms, that you're allowed to.

Also, a bundled Java application runs only on Mac OS X. OS X comes with JavaApplicationStub already installed (in the location listed in the quote), which suggests that all your potential users are already licensed to have it.

True, but what if a Windows user downloads my program?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Apple engineers agree with the idea, but Apple lawyers and policy makers don't like it.

Agreed ... but the problem is that now there's this legal grey area....

And regarding the suggestion from Dmitry/Steve etc. on copying the file from /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/MacOS/ JavaApplicationStub ....

I'd hate to be forced to write an installer! Installing on the Mac should be dragging the executable onto your hard disk.

I wonder if it would be safe to just build a ***soft-link*** in my application bundle to point to the installed /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/MacOS/ JavaApplicationStub file. Or would I be risking this location changing in the near future?
