Actually you'd think this could be done without requiring a manual confirmation.

various people have looked at ways to build in this kind of system, including me. there are some interesting ideas out there. But -- how to build one the spammers can't abuse, and how to build one that isn't vendor specific is interesting and difficult.

Look at, for instance,

or

just as some general thoughts. Note the first was written 18 months ago...

now, given this entire discussion started based on a newly written e-mail system that doesn't follow BASIC e-mail standards -- you tell me the chances of building something like that... If "the pros" (and with groups like this, I use the term very loosely) are getting basic things wrong like when to use the envelope instead of the from, how are they ever going to implement anything complex?

is found a confirmation is automatically returned. Eliminates the need for the manual confirmation, I'm not sure it reduces any 'spam' or potential 'spam' related bandwidth problems.

how do you eliminate spammers building systems to auto-confirm, then?

by the way, challenge-response systems were cracked by spammers long ago. They are in such low usage in the general population 9because they are a pain to use and maintain, and awkward to implement, and block legitimate e-mail as much as spam) that spammers simply haven't worried about them. But if they ever become used enough to warrant it, the spammers will work around them. Pretty simply, in fact.
