What would probably encourage JUnit-style tests is the availability of a standalone scaffolding that can be used to run just that one test, so that people wouldn't *have* to download the whole JUnit package. Something along the lines of a predefined main() which took as an argument the name of the TestCase subclass and did whatever JUnit would have done, but just for that one class. There'd be no test automation, no support for multiple tests, just the bare minimum needed to run one test.
