Will it cause any "issues" with my current system Mac OS X?
If you are talking about Apple's Java 1.5 (5.0) distribution then see
Glen's answer.
If you are thinking about installing a Sun Java distribution on Mac OS
X the answer is you cannot since Sun doesn't support Mac OS X at this
time.
Apple is the one that provides Java on Mac OS X not Sun and
traditionally Apple has released the next major version of Java on the
next major version of Mac OS X (which is currently Mac OS X 10.4
"Tiger" some time in first half of '05). Apple's Java is packaged as
part of the OS and indirectly as a result it can be dependent on OS
capabilities hence requiring particular versions of Mac OS X to
function.
For a history of releases of Java on Mac OS X see the following page
(not yet updated to list "1.4.2 Update 2" reciently released by
Apple)...
