RE: When will Java 1.5 be available for Mac OS X?

Nah. "When will the next version of Java be out?" has been a FAQ for eons. If Sun comes out with anything, there's an immediate barrage of "So when will the Mac have it?" posts.

If that's the case, then Apple abandoned tradition some time back. Java 1.4.1 and Java 1.4.2 (and updates to both) came out at times unrelated to major OS releases. Current intent seems to be keeping Java's schedule independent of the OS proper. (This is why Java updates are separate from OS updates.)

While popular opinion is that Java 1.5 will coincide with 10.4, that's based largely on the fact that both products are under development at the same time, and past Java releases have required then-unreleased versions of the OS (that is, the beta Java required the beta OS). (Any substantiation of the speculation would require that beta 10.4 users violate their NDAs.)
