A malformed URL by any other name? You may run into browser inconsistencies in how they are handled I'd imagine although I haven't experimented with how many different ways there are to malform one and how each browser handles it. A well formed URL you would hope would be handled right by all as long as the style of path is as expected. Although yes the type of path should be what is expected as well.
