What is the time-table for Apple including Java 5 with an OS Update of Mac OS X (as in Tiger)? I'm considering requesting OS X for use at work, but will fairly quickly need it to run Java 5. Thanks very much,

Bruce,

Apple has not made any public statement regarding any planned support for Java 5/1.5. It is a much discussed issue on this list, and there might even be 1.5 features that you can do with other libraries that work with Java 1.4.

I recommend that you look at the list archives at: http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2004

There you will find some discussion on whether the Tiger preview will get you a beta of any Java 5 by Apple. I don't have it so don't know, and those who do have it are probably under NDA.

It won't take you long to find stuff on Java 5/Java 1.5 and see what has been said so far. The most recent discussion was around about the 5th Oct.

Maybe one day Apple will see there way to add some level of statement on Java 5 at http://developer.apple.com/java/faq/ ... even if it is 'Apple has not yet announced when Java 5 will be available... check back here later...'

Regards,

Neil
