RE: looking at generic

Has anyone seen http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5/pdf/generics-tutorial.pdf

It is a good, but scary, overview of generics in Java. By scary I mean
it's all quite complicated, and extensive use of the more subtle
features of generics will certainly make the code unreadable. Myself,
I'm tempted to live on the edge, forgoing the compile time safety of
generics, and live with run-time errors just to make the code more
readable.

I wonder if "The Java Programming Language, Forth Edition" is going to
give generics a reasonable treatment? It will certainly have to go into
more detail than the tutorial.

While taking a C++ course from Scott Meyers he promoted the notion of
two classes of C++ programmers: type designers and mere developers. I
can see the same thing happening with Java because of generics. Generics
have pushed Java out of the category of small elegant languages and into
the same class as Ada and C++.

I can only hope IDEs like Eclipse will guide developers through the
complexity of generics as it does with other error messages. But I
cringe at the thought of having to take over someone else's code who
zealously uses generics.
