I don't know if there is a way to force a specific style in Apple's Aqua
Look and Feel.
I fear there is not. I haven't read the latest release notes for Java 1.4
Update 2 though.
Shameless plug:
I have implemented a ComboBoxUI of my own for the Quaqua Look and Feel.
(This feature works with Java 1.4 only.)

Currently my ComboBoxUI mimiks the behaviour of Apple's Aqua Look and Feel.
So there is no way either.
But I could add support for a client property, which lets you explicitly
define a specific style.
So, if using a different look and feel is suitable for you, I'll add that
feature to an upcoming version of the Quaqua L&F. - This might cost you a
bottle of wine though. ;-)
Since the Quaqua L&F is open source, you can add this option by yourself. -
no wine needed.
