Re: Java 1.5 and tiger

I also thought that Tiger on Tiger was more or less a sure thing. This adds even more doubt to Apple's commitment to Java.

Java 5.0 is not exactly what I would consider fresh off Sun's press anymore and Java 6.0 is even starting to be discussed more (with a beta starting in November of this year and a final release planned for May of next year). This might sound like a ways away but considering that Java 5.0 was released in September 2004 and the first preview of Java 5.0 was available in February 2004 and we still don't even have an official developer preview of 5.0 makes me a little worried. It is understandable that Apple wants to wait until the spec for a Java version is finalized. The fact of the matter is that the 5.0 spec was finalized long before the actual Java 5.0 final candidate was released in September, it was finalized by the JCP some time in 2003. As a Java developer this makes me wonder whether I should hold off upgrading my PowerBook and get an x86 and run linux instead.

I am not expecting Apple to release versions of Java for Mac OS X on the same day that Sun releases them. But versions such as 5.0 contain important language level improvements. Earlier Developer Previews would be important looking towards the future. This would give Java developers on the Mac time to play with the new versions before they are released and learn to harness the new features and dare I say even write an application so that when the final version is released there are already apps available. A perfect example is that if I want to develop a J2EE/JSP web app using Tomcat 5 and the new Java 5.0 language features I simply can't do it on my favorite platform.

Java release cycles are not getting any slower and they are involving the general developer community more and more.

Either you are committed to Java or you aren't. If you are then give your developers a preview, even it it outright says as part of the disclaimer that functionality in the preview is bound to change.

Hello all,
I noticed on the FAQ that a preview of J2SE 5.0 is available for Tiger, but I was wondering if there was any indiciation as to when it would go final.  I think many people (myself included) were hoping that J2SE 5.0 would ship with Tiger, but from all indications on OS X website, it will not (it will come with 1.4.2 instead).  Thanks for anything you can pass along.
