Re: Tiger to ship on April 29

Only if "a lawyer's interpretation" means one supported by fact, logic, and
hiatorical precedent. The text you quoted offers no support at all for 10.4
*including* Java 1.5, for reasons already explained.

*shrug* Live in a fantasy world if you like. I prefer the reality-based one,
myself.

| I agree that I wouldn't bet my life that Java 1.5 will be in Tiger, but
| the evidence points in that direction.

What evidence is that? The only "evidence" that anyone has offered is the
fact that Java 1.5 requires Tiger. But, as noted already, "A requires B"
doesn't imply "B includes A". Balanced against that is Apple's *explicit*
statement that Tiger comes with 1.4.2, a statement consistent with the Tiger
*beta* not including Java 1.5. If one assumes that "the beta predicts the
final", then Tiger *won't* come with Java 1.5.

Want more? Go to
"http://www.apple.com/macosx/overview/advancedtechnology.html";, a page that
describes Tiger's fancy toys:

* "With the release of Mac OS X Tiger, Apple delivers the astounding
power of 64-bit computing to the Mac."
* "Mac OS X Tiger introduces a breakthrough image-processing technology
  known as Core Image..."
* "Tiger also features QuickTime 7 with H.264,"

Clearly, the page doesn't contain just leftover Panther verbiage, as might
be claimed for the Java-specific page. So, what does *this* page say about
Java?

Apple has made Java a core-component of Mac OS X, which includes the
full version Java 2, Standard Edition, version 1.4.2.

Note the version: 1.4.2. Even a page that has *unquestionably* been revised
for Tiger says 1.4.2. Now *that's* evidence.

| Another piece of evidence (for me) is that Apple developer support told
| me that the Font AffineTransform bug, which was introduced with Apple's
| port of 1.4.0 two years ago, "has been resolved and will be available
| when Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) is made available to the public." Which
| doesn't exactly state, but indicates strongly enough for my taste, that
| the fix is in Java 1.5.0.

What does that have to do with whether 10.4 includes 1.5? Assume that Java
1.5 is 100% bug-free, that not only that the AffineTransform bug but *every
known bug* has been fixed in Java 1.5, and no new bugs have been introduced.
What does that tell you about 1.5 being part of 10.4? Nothing.

Java 1.5 requires 10.4. That's Apple's official position. That being the
case, Java 1.5 *cannot* be publicly released before "Tiger is made available
to the public", by the normal workings of Apple's software-release policies.
But nothing about that requires that Java 1.5 be released *as part of*
Tiger, or even *at the same time* as Tiger. As well, J. Random Appleemployee
isn't in a position to make more than vague, happy-sounding statements about
when Feature X will be released, because (1) Apple policy forbids him making
specific statements, and (2) J. Random Appleemployee doesn't make those
decisions, and so doesn't have the authority to promise anything. Things
said by Mr. Appleemployee are grist for speculation, but nothing more.
