I also thought that Tiger on Tiger was more or less a sure thing.
This adds even more doubt to Apple's commitment to Java.
I suspect it is a matter of release dates. Tiger needed lockdown a
week and a half ago in order for it to be in the box. Java, as a
developer tool, can benefit from up to a month of further work while
that process continues.
[C]onsidering that Java 5.0 was released in September 2004 and the
first preview of Java 5.0 was available in February 2004 and we
still don't even have an official developer preview of 5.0 makes me
a little worried.
Worry not. There has been a preview available for Tiger since late
last year (mentioned publicly on the Java page). In fact, I have
been using it for an NIH project that needed 1.5 since November.
Since Tiger is still under NDA, I will not say more, but rest assured
that I have used it a fair amount, and it has worked for me.
Either you are committed to Java or you aren't. If you are then
give your developers a preview, even it it outright says as part of
the disclaimer that functionality in the preview is bound to change.
Since the current previews only worked with a beta OS under NDA, they
were under NDA as well. I suspect that one the OS does not require a
seed key, the DP will not either. I do not know that, but that is my
bet.
