Our current plan is to go for a color histogram as a first order rank, producing between a hundred and a thousand bins. We hope to get a pretty even binning for the 40k images, leaving us perhaps 500 images to cross compare in each bin. Some file size heuristics should get us down to no more than 10k comparisons of perhaps five images in batches
