I'm sure some where at every institution there's an external drive
of some sort that can be used to perform an upgrade. The installer
may even work off a server.
You don't even need that:
Put the machine into target disk mode, connect it to a machine with a
DVD-ROM drive and install from the other machine. Reboot. Done.
In a lab you can install from a modern laptop.
Built-in FireWire is a requirement of 10.4.
I'm sure most Mac users have a friend with a Mac.
Can we move on?
