Our applications are based largely on Image operations and
transforms; I
enabled Quartz 2D Extreme (both in the Debug app and as a parameter to
Java), and the speed of the app was cut in half.
Java for Windows has been able to cache images as textures since 1.4,
although some transforms weren't supported until the 1.5 OpenGL
pipeline.
I don't think it looks very good when your app on a five-year-old
Windows
machine outperforms itself on newer Macs (including dual G5s).
Really rather depressing, especially when they were so close with
the 1.3
VM. Are we ever getting this back?
Also note you could consider interfacing with Core Image if you
really want things to fly.
