The first thought that pops to mind, and granted it may be a bit kludgy, would be to re-map those functions to include an additional key (say, the CTRL key) that would displace it from the *monitored* Function Key traps that are built into the OS. Then in your Java code you could strip the trapped input down and send the *appropriate* input to the AS/400.
