Yes, it was. With 1.4, the Java team decided to rely on the OS to
do the graphics acceleration, rather than buidling it into Java.
It would appear that the OS team has finally come through.
With that approach, 1.4.2 on 10.4 should speed up just because the
OS is faster, no? That is, perhaps there's no significant
difference between the graphics code in Java 1.4.2 and in Java 1.5.
Depends. They may also have leveraged some of Sun's swing OpenGL
drawing pipeline acceleration, which only really worked with 1.5.
Still, improving graphics throughput at the OS level is going to help
every app. It would also not surprise me if optimization focussed on
Cocoa, which would help both 1.4 and 1.5 equally.
