I'm no expert on this topic, so I'll offer a few suggestions ;^)
1) O'Reilly has a book called "Java Performance Tuning" that you might
find useful. To honest, it's in my "unread" pile, so I don't know how
good it really is.
2) Java 5 (when and if we ever get it on the Mac :( ) has apparently
made some significant improvements to the hotspot optimizer, including
the ability to tune itself without requiring many of the invocation
options used in pre-Java 5 VMs. There should be a whitepaper or two on
Sun's website about it.
