Re: Subject: JDK 5: No acceleration?

we have very complex molecular dynamic simulations
and I can not see any thing close to 10% of 1.3.1 slowness
it's about 20% slower than windows similar computer
it doesn't run on 1.3.1 so I can not compare
but I doubt about 10% very much I remember 1.3.1 application was running slower on Mac than on Windows too

we many other simulations and they run just fine
gl4java runs fast enough and here I can tell it's not slower at all (wel it's understandable)
jmol runs about the same speed

our applications in many cases run faster on Macintosh than on Linux (Java 5)

so I don't think that sentence "making it a very poor choice indeed for simulators, games, and 2D visualization systems"
is correct at least for our applications

Weren't we supposed to be getting graphical acceleration back finally?

Yes, we were. That was the explicit reason that Apple had explained the decision to slice out the hardware acceleration present in 1.3.1. 1.4.2 draws line, images, and rects _dramatically_ (like 1/10 or less) slower than 1.3.1, making it a very poor choice indeed for simulators, games, and 2D visualization systems. I'd been waiting patiently after Apple's assurances and Greg's apologetics :-). Can anyone else verify this? That'd be very bad if it were true.

BTW, after all these bond movies, it's nice to finally meet you, M.
