If you are recreating images and/or references to images then you lose the caching that Q2DX will attempt to do using VRAM.
Also if you are doing things such that the rendering done by the GPU has to be read back out to RAM, etc. you are likely gonna take a performance hit.
Of course it is hard to know what Apple's implementation of Java is doing behind the scenes that also may be contributing to any potential performance issues.
Note a new feature at the Quartz layer...
As a side note...

...how about that for precision in bitmaps.
