maybe this will help:

AWM01:~ macawm$ java -version
java version "1.5.0_02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_02-56)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_02-36, mixed mode, sharing)

So I like to be a little unsupported ;)

Exactly what "variety of methods" have you tried that didn't work?
Please be specific about what you did.

I tried removing bad fonts (someone suggested this when they got a NullPointerException with the app). I used Font Book to verify that all of the installed fonts weren't corrupted. I also tried running it under a different user.
