Hiding the Dock?

Our cross-platform application looks fine on Windows, but on Mac if a user has a large dock size then certain controls get chopped off our panels.

We've squeezed out every last inch of spare UI we can think of; now we want to try to set the 'autohide' property of the dock to true if we can tell there's going to be a size problem.

We're looking into doing this with AppleScript. We found some easy ways to query the property and set it correctly. And we can add a runtime hook to change it back, if appropriate. In order to make the changes take effect, we'll have to kill the dock process. We've tried this with no ill side-effects; so we assume its safe (?).

This might cause some problems for users switching to other apps before they leave our program (the dock would still be on autohide), but I think that's the lesser of our possible evils right now.

We feel like we have a handle on how to proceed; but I wanted to ask if anyone has anyone have any suggestions based on past experience? Does what we're describing have any obvious flaws?
